Vessels — the basics
The Vessels module is your directory of ships. You can look up a vessel, see its details (dimensions, identifiers, current position, recent port visits), and keep your own vessels and notes alongside the shared data.
Open it from the sidebar: Vessels (the ship icon). You need the Ships permission to see it.
Where vessels come from
SHIPM8 already knows about a huge number of ships from shared maritime data, so most vessels are already there to look up — you don't have to add them. On top of that, your organisation can:
- Add its own vessels that aren't in the shared data.
- Tag any vessel and add extra fields of your own, to keep the information that matters to you.
There's an important difference to keep in mind:
- Shared vessels (from the maritime data) can be viewed by everyone, but their core details aren't editable — you can still add your own tags and fields to them.
- Your own vessels (ones your organisation added) can be fully edited and deleted.
What you can do
- Find a vessel — search the list, simply or in detail.
- Vessel details — what the details screen shows.
- Add a vessel — register a ship your organisation needs.
- Edit or delete a vessel — change or remove your own vessels.
- Tags — label vessels so they're easy to group and find.
- Custom fields — add your own pieces of information to a vessel.
A note on the buttons
A few buttons — Save, New, Add, Edit, Search, Clear — show in English even when the app is set to Dutch. This guide uses those English labels so they match your screen.
