Add a field

A field is one box on your object's form. Open the object from the overview, then click Field definition (the + button) to add one. Fill it in and click Save.

The essentials

  • Field type (required) — what kind of box this is. See Field types. Some types reveal a few extra settings (for example, decimals for numbers, or the choices for a list).
  • Name (required) — what the box is called, e.g. "Inspector".
  • System code (required) — a short code SHIPM8 uses behind the scenes. It's filled in for you from the name; you can adjust it when creating, but not after.
  • Description — an optional note explaining what to put in the box.
  • Default — a value the box starts with for new entries (optional). For a date you get a date picker, for yes/no a tick box, and so on.
  • Sort order — a number that controls where this box appears on the form (lower numbers come first).
  • Group — an optional heading to group related boxes together on the form.

Then choose how it behaves

A field also has a handful of on/off options — whether it must be filled in, whether it can be edited, and so on. Those are covered on the next page: Field options.

Save

Click Save and the field is added to the object. It then shows up in the object's field list, grouped under its heading, with its sort-order number and a red asterisk if it's required.

tip

You don't have to get everything perfect first time. You can open a field again later to change most settings — see Manage & advanced.
